ABOUT US

what we exist to do

mission

Our mission is the call that is on our lives and at Union Memorial the call is to seek, serve and stand in solidarity with our neighbors. This means we are called to take the spiritual development and empowerment we receive through Christian formation group and Sunday morning worship experience beyond the four walls of the church.

To seek, serve and stand in solidarity with our neighbors.

SEEK

When we go out into the world, we have been equipped with the necessary tools to discern our brothers and sisters whom life has dealt a bad hand and has victimized them to the point where they are the least, last and lost of in our communities. We recognize that we must also come alongside and champion those who are actively working to improve the conditions of others. We seek out those in need of what we have, but also acknowledge that they have talents, skills and abilities that we are in need of us as well and welcome their gifts into our midst.

SERVE

When we come in contact with our brothers and sisters, we are compelled to building meaningful relationships with them that go beyond surface level interactions. We spend time listening to them for the purposes of learning their stories and understanding their needs. We work to not only help provide them with their day-to-day needs, but also to connect them with resources they need to improve their qualities of life and the world around them.

STAND

We recognize that our coming along brothers and sisters who may not necessary be where they want to be along their life's journey can't just be for a moment.  They must know that they are supported  in the low moments as well as the high. We believe it is our responsibility to stand in the corner of others, cheering them on to victory and when needed stepping in to assist them in the fight until they can catch their breath and resolve to carry on until they reach their destiny. We understand that we are more than just a handout, or a prayer. We are part of the community and the success of all its members will ultimately affect our success as well.

what we can be when we live out our call

vision

Our vision for Union Memorial is that it will become "A Center for Revitalization of the Whole Person and Community". This vision is derived from our pastor's belief that the church of today must become like the church of yesteryear as the place where all of God's people can come and have their spiritual as well as practical needs met.

HARLEM RENAISSANCE PROJECT

Over the course of a two-year period, from 2016 to 2018, Dr. Jordan-Griffin and the Union Memorial congregation engaged in research, analysis and design of a project as an outgrowth of his doctoral thesis Transforming High Steeple Churches into Community Revitalization Centers. In this work, seven recommendations are made for how church can achieve this goal in community.
